A community townhall · Powell River, BC

It's time to talk about seniors care in Powell River.

Too many of our seniors are waiting in hospital corridors for a long-term care bed that never seems to come. Join your neighbours for an evening of honest discussion, clear information, and a search for solutions.

We are Advocates for Senior Care on the Upper Sunshine Coast — a group of local people who believe our community can do better for its seniors.

The townhall will shine a spotlight on the issues and concerns in seniors care in Powell River. A panel of about five people who know these issues firsthand will situate the problems, share information, and offer insight — and the questions and stories will come from you, the community.

A problem we can't look away from

Caught between hospital and long-term care

When a senior is hospitalized and deemed needing long term care with no capability of that care being provided at home, they stay in hospital until a bed in a facility becomes available. In Powell River, that wait too often lasts weeks or months.

Many are held in beds lining the corridors, or moved from room to room as space opens up. For people living with dementia, the disruption and confusion are especially hard to bear.

We are bringing this to the townhall not just to name the problem, but to seek discussion of real solutions.

What to expect at the townhall

  • A knowledgeable panel. About five people who can situate the issues and provide information and insight to address the community's concerns.
  • Your stories and questions, front and centre. We're gathering both ahead of the meeting, so the evening reflects what families here have lived through and the most pressing community concerns are sure to be covered.
  • A focus on solutions. The goal isn't only to describe what's wrong — it's to start fixing it, together.

This townhall is a beginning

One evening won't solve everything — and it isn't meant to. We see the townhall as the start of an ongoing process to improve services for seniors and to make a lasting, positive impact on their quality of life in our community.
